An Update on Miss Keri and the 1-Page Health News For You...
By Dr. Glenn Hyman / Dr. Jeff Stripling Denver Chiropractic Center www.denverback.com
Denver's Back Pain and Sports Injury Treatment Center (TM) 303.300.0424

Hi Glenn,

Miss Keri, the office manger here at Denver Chiropractic Center wanted to say thanks to everyone for the concern after her "meeting" with the concrete wall while on her bike last week.

Her nasty injury required a little attention from a wound care nurse to make sure it doesn't leave a scar, but she's on the mend. Once again thanks for your concern. That last email about her bike crash received the highest open response of any email we've ever sent.

And here's this week's 1-page health news.

Mental Attitude: Meditation. Adults with memory impairment and memory loss may benefit from mantra-based meditation (12 minutes of meditation per day for 8 weeks). Mantra-based meditation has demonstrated a positive effect on patients' emotional responses to stress, fatigue and anxiety. Findings revealed a substantial increase in cerebral blood flow in the patients' prefrontal, superior frontal, and superior parietal cortices, and also better cognitive function. Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, March 2012

Health Alert: Diabetics And Stroke. 26 million Americans have diabetes, and more than half are younger than 65. The longer you have diabetes, the higher your risk for stroke. Compared to people without diabetes (after considering other factors such as age, smoking history, physical activity, history of heart disease, blood pressure and cholesterol), the risk of stroke increased 70% in people with diabetes for less than 5 years, 80% in people with diabetes for 5-10 years and three-fold in people with diabetes for 10 years or more. American Heart Association, March 2012

Diet: Seeing Things? Hungry people see food-related words more clearly than people who've just eaten. This change in vision happens at the earliest perceptual stages, before higher parts of the brain have a chance to change the messages coming from the eyes. Psychological Science, March 2012

Exercise: Good Reasons. Exercise helps to alleviate low-back pain, helps to reduce the amount of insulin required to control blood sugar levels in Type I (insulin-dependent) diabetics and improves mental alertness. Surgeon General's Report on Physical Activity and Health, 1996

Chiropractic: Hold Your Head Up! "Head in forward posture can add up to thirty pounds of abnormal leverage on the cervical spine. Forward head posture (FHP) may result in the loss of 30% of vital lung capacity. These breath-related effects are primarily due to the loss of the cervical lordosis, which blocks the action of the hyoid muscles, especially the inferior hyoid responsible for helping lift the first rib during inhalation." ~Rene Cailliet M.D., famous medical author and former Director of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the University of Southern California

Wellness/Prevention: Avoid Absenteeism. The US is losing $226 billion per year due to employee absenteeism. A worker is less likely to take sick leave if their supervisor offers support (lightened work load or stress management training) when an employee is experiencing psychosomatic stress symptoms. The worker feels inclined to reciprocate the supportive treatment by keeping their work effort high. European Journal of Work and Organizational Psychology, January 2012

Quote: "Anything is possible. You can be told that you have a 90% chance or a 50% chance or a 1% chance, but you have to believe, and you have to fight." ~ Lance Armstrong

[Altitude Multisport Club] Please vote on this proposed change to our Club's bylaws

Hi everyone -

At its March meeting, your hard-working Altitude Multisport Club Board of Directors discussed a proposed change to the Club's bylaws that would make it easier for your Treasurer to pay some Club bills.

Currently our bylaws require the President and Treasurer to sign all Club checks.  This makes it difficult to make quick payments (to reimburse people for season kickoff party expenses, for example), since the Treasurer is busy with a job and training and your President seems to work 20 hours a day (wishes he could train more, honestly, but today is a great example because having slept half the day away where is the time? how did it get dark already?  how did I get to be 46 anyway?  I should still be in college. . . )

The Board proposes a change to the Club's bylaws that would allow your President - this one or any subsequent one who will in all likelihood manage his or her time better - to approve Club expenditures by email instead of requiring him or her to physically meet the Treasurer to add a second signature to a check.

Here's a link to your Club's bylaws:  http://www.altitudemultisport.com/bylaws

We have a very simple form set up for you to place your vote on this proposed change.  The official tally of votes will take place at our next Club meeting, which is set for May 14th.  Please use this form to vote; anyone who has not voted before the meeting can vote at the meeting:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?formkey=dEp6QTJoaWxRR0dzelQ4cVl5Sm5GZlE6MQ

This is your Club and your vote on this matter is important.  Please vote.

Thanks!!

[emrat:1451] EM/RAT May meeting reminder

Hi Guys,

Reminding everyone that the May RAT meeting is this Tuesday (May 1) at the usual time & location: “The Rackhouse Pub208 South Kalamath Street Denver, CO 80223-1813 at 7:00pm.

The guest speakers for the evening will be our own Captain Bob & Denise Wendl – Their topic will be “Preparing for an extended motorcycle road trip” – since they are headed up to Alaska this summer I’m sure we will be getting some very timely information.

There is finally NO SNOW in the DIA forecast so hopefully this “Spring Thaw” will allow a certain heretofore frozen RAT to attend and discuss the Spring Opener and The Triumph in the Rockies Rally :-)

TimG

PS.  If you have any T-Shirt design submissions for the “Triumph in the Rockies –Montrose 2012” rally - please send them to me or bring them Tuesday night.

[emrat:1444] Miller Motorsports SBK - Memorial Weekend

Anyone going to the World Superbike races out in Utah on May 26 -28?  Anybody want to go? I do! Who's in? There is no plan yet. But I finally have some vacation, and I WANT TO RIDE.

Well, (to paraphrase Wayne Everman) which one of you SOB's wants to get there second?

I would plan on 4 - 5 days, Friday through Monday or Tuesday, or whatever. Has anyone heard from Peter Sharp, is he going?? Are there any friends, or friends of friends, that would welcome a few RATs to their home for the weekend? How about friends of fiends? (fiend n. 3. Informal. One who is completely absorbed in or obsessed with a given job or pastime. ( i.e. motorcycling))

OK, the tequila is getting to me. Just let me know in a hurry, we can finalize in Westcliffe if need be.

Hasta la vista,
Warf

P.S. - I'm planning to do the whole trifecta - Wetscliffe, Montrose and Taos, (and Utah)
