PRESS RELEASE Denver Parks & Recreation and BikeDenver Join Forces to Bring Volunteer Courtesy Patrol Back More than 45 bicycle patrol volunteers to expand the reach of the Park Ranger program DENVER, CO — Saturday, May 19, 2012 – Deputy Manager of Parks & Recreation Scott Gilmore, Executive Director of BikeDenver Piep van Heuven, and a group of Bicycle Courtesy Patrol Volunteers today launched the start of the Volunteer Courtesy Patrol program at Confluence Park. The new volunteer program aims to expand the reach of the Park Ranger program and help educate park users about basic park and trail safety rules and courtesies. “We’re proud of our partnership with BikeDenver,” said Scott Gilmore, Deputy Manager of Parks & Recreation. “The second year of this program will help us continue to educated people on our parks and natural resources and help park rangers ensure that there is someone available to help residents and visitors throughout the City.” The Volunteer Courtesy Patrol consists of more than 45 volunteer bicyclists. This summer, volunteers will assist Park Rangers in four of Denver’s most popular spaces – the Cherry Creek Trail, South Platte Trail, Bear Creek Trail, City Park, Cheesman Park and Washington Park. Goals of the program include: - Increase the Denver Park Ranger’s presence and visibility in four of Denver’s most popular parks and multi-use trails
- Educate trail and park users about basic safety rules and courtesies
- Model safe riding behaviors for bicyclists
- Assist residents and visitors by providing directions and information
- Report on conflict areas and physical safety issues.
Volunteers will be in the four parks, identified by special bike jerseys, assisting in pairs 3-4 times a month in 3-4 hour shifts on weekends from June to August. “Our continued partnership with Parks & Recreation on the Volunteer Courtesy Patrol program is such a great benefit to the community,” said Piep van Heuven. “Not only does the Courtesy Patrol help further BikeDenver’s goal to educate bicyclists on safe and courteous bicycling behavior they also provide a perfect opportunity to help Park Rangers and provide for a safer riding experience.” # # # |
