Subject: Dentist Using Unsafe Injection Practices
This afternoon, CDPHE distributed a press release concerning a Denver area dentist, Dr. Stephen Stein, whose offices were involved with unsafe injection practices that may have resulted in people being exposed to blood borne pathogens such as HIV, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C. The press release is attached. Due to the media attention, I expect that CBOs and local public health agencies may get a high number of requests for information and testing. I would like to offer some guidance for our state funded HCV testing sites.
· Our HCV testing criteria will not change in response to this situation.
o Due to limited resources, CDPHE Viral Hepatitis Program funding and test kits cannot be used for HCV testing for people whose only risk is a dental procedure with Dr. Stein.
o If someone is requesting HCV testing but they do not qualify for a free test, refer them to COHELP
o Resources and referrals are available through COHELP
· COHELP can be reached toll free at 1 (877) 462-2911.
· Please understand that people affected by this situation may be fearful, confused and have many questions. At this time, we have only identified substandard infection control practices. We have not identified any infection associated with Dr. Stein’s office.
· This is a good opportunity to brush up on HIV, HCV, HBV as there may be a lot of questions coming from media and the public. Educational information can be found at http://www.cdphe.state.co.us/dc/index.html and http://www.cdc.gov/
Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions. Thank you for all your hard work.
