The Father Ed Judy House is a small shelter on the campus of Fort Logan in southwest Denver that serves women with children who are homeless and rebuilding their lives. The vast majority of the women we work with are also survivors of domestic violence, and many have multiple barriers to housing. In addition to our shelter ministry, we have a thriving alumni program that supports families as they transition back into the community and offers a holist solution to chronic family homelessness.
Unfortunately, we can no longer afford the wonderful dinners that the Fort Logan hospital cafeteria has made for us for many, many years. Because of tightening state budgets, they were forced to triple our cost per meal. The new pricing structure is way beyond what we can afford.
In response, we are reaching out to the community for help. We are looking for volunteers to cook and bring dinner to families living in shelter. Our moms are typically gone from at least 9:00am until 3:30pm each week-day looking for housing, applying for jobs, and taking their children to and from school and day-care. Having a hot, ready-made, nutritious dinner in the evening is a blessing that we desperately want to continue.
So, if you, or your family, or even a small group you belong to is interested in both cooking and making a positive impact in the community – this could be a wonderful opportunity! We invite you to bring dinner, come tour our small homeless shelter, and meet the remarkable families we serve.
A Few Details:
• We would need dinner for 9 adults and between 11-16 children each night. This number varies and we can give you a clearer number a couple of days in advance.
• Monday through Thursday we have evening activities, so groups can just drop dinner off.
• Friday through Sunday, there is time in the evening if you would like to stay and join the meal.
• We have created a two week rotating menu with general suggestions. For example, Friday is fiesta night ~ so Mexican food would be lovely. Thursdays are Soup & Salad nights, etc.
• You could either drop dinner off at noon (assembled and thawed – and we can heat/bake it) or ready to eat at 5:00pm
Please call us for additional details (303) 866-7641 or email at fejhvolunteers@ccdenver.org. We would love to talk with you more about this. Thank you in advance for all your prayers and generosity –
