Namaste!

Before we kickstart YFS activities for 2012, we thought of starting with giving everyone an update of what our previous efforts have resulted in. Most of you know that we raised $25,000 during our "Cricket For Charity" fund raising campaign during summer 2011 - for educating underprivileged children through a project called Vidyadaan. We've attached below a report summarizing the progress of the same.

In the weeks ahead, you'll also see more information about our activities for 2012, including Cricket Tournament, Publicolor, Meals On Wheels and our other local volunteering projects.

Vidyadaan 2011-12

Academic year 2011-12 was the first year of Vidyadaan efforts by the YFS team in India. The idea was to provide scholarships to the poorest of poor children, while keeping the administrative costs low. With the help of several partner NGOs that have good rural outreach, team YFS is proud to announce the success of Vidyadaan 2011-12.

As announced, each student received Rs 300 per month as scholarship, which was utilized towards his/her boarding, lodging and education expenses. In the end, the team catered to 490 students from the donations received from within India and abroad. In addition to providing scholarships, the team also supplied school-kits at the beginning of the academic year and installed/replenished libraries in several schools.

Fund raising by YFS USA team
From the funds raised by the YFS USA team till July 2011, 282 students were selected for sponsorship @ Rs 3600 per child per year. Of these:
  • 40% of the students are from a tribal background - their families are still settled in remote forest areas. These students were relocated to nearby towns in the 30-50 km radius and hosted in a boarding facility.
  • 60% of the students are from rural villages with little to non-existent primary education infrastructure.

Another 148 students will benefit this year from the funds that were raised later in the year 2011. Overall, 430 students gained education sponsorship for a full year, thanks to our donors from USA!

Progress Reports
Here is a video report summarizing Vidyadaan 2011-12 [Youtube]

Here are some reports sent out last year:
October 2011: Donor - Child, Video Conference
December 2011: Tribal Area Visit - Meeting Vidyadaan beneficiaries

Going forward
Needless to say, each and every student benefiting from Vidyadaan is and will be ever grateful for all your generous support. Personally, I had a great time interacting with some of these children and as a donor, if you wish to meet the kids, the YFS team in India will be more than happy to facilitate the same.

Our efforts during 2011 were just the beginning and we have a long way to go before making any meaningful impact in eradicating childhood illiteracy. Moreover, we have a responsibility to continuously support the education of the 430 students in the coming years..

So, we request each one of you to continue to support the Vidyadaan program and also circulate this email among your friends and family.
