[emrat:1540] Molly Dharma Run for the Max Fund

Hello,

I just pre-registered for the Molly Dharma run to benefit the Max Fund.  The Max Fund is a true no-kill animal shelter in Denver and this run was started by someone whom adopted a dog that had been back to the shelter a few times.

Pre-registration can be done online before June 6th, and you get a $5.00 discount on the fee.  Breakfast burritos are provided by Platte River Bar and Grille, but you do have to get there early (registration/food starts at 9:00 and the ride leaves about 10:30).

If anyone would like to meet before to be able to ride as a group, let me know.  I'm thinking I can be at a location close to the starting point between 8:30 and 9:00 and leave at 9:00.  I still need to find that location though.

Below are the links needed for anyone interested.

A Word from Councilman Brooks

The District 8 City Council Office is MOVING - Effective Thurs., May 31, 2012

• The District 8 Office is moving to the new Eastside Human Services building, located at 3815 Steele Street, Denver, CO 80205.
We will be back in a year, located at 2855 Tremont Pl.
• ALL of our contact information will remain the same.
• We apologize ahead of time for any inconvenience.

County Fair at City Park and District 8 Ice Cream Social this Friday, June 1st

The City Park Alliance Board and Councilman Albus Brooks, invite you to attend the annual event honoring historical City Park and the traditions that began in 2008 by the late Councilwoman Carla Madison and continue today.

This turn-of-the-century fair celebrating Denver's most beautiful park in its historic glory was one of the late Councilwoman Carla Madison's favorite events and she helped spearhead it.  City Park Alliance combined its annual open house event with Councilwoman Madison’s Old Fashioned Ice Cream Social in 2010 and has continued to carry on the tradition of the County Fair after her passing.  The District 8 office is continuing the tradition and has partnered with City Park Alliance for the 2012 event.

Participants will see the Denver Municipal Band play to the fountain show, entertainment and craft stations will provide free fun for the entire family, food vendors will be on hand and there will be free ice cream available for all who attend.  Neighbors and guests are encouraged to wear period costumes to take part in the costume contest.

City Park Alliance is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and any proceeds or donations received will directly benefit City Park and are tax deductible.
Please feel free to wear your old-fashioned attire... or just come as you are and enjoy yourself.

• The event will be held this Friday, June 1st at the Pavilion in the center of City Park in Denver.
• It begins at 6pm and ends after dusk at 9pm.
• Re-Imagine Play at City Park Playground will be on display, so you can give input on the new playground for the City.

Arrests made in Denver Double-Fatal Shooting

Police have arrested two men suspected in a shooting that left two people dead and two others wounded last Friday, May 25, 2012. Marquise Davis, 23 and Denzel Richardson, 20, were both taken into custody Monday. According to Denver Police, the victims were standing on the sidewalk along East Bruce Randolph Avenue at York Street when they were approached by two men on foot who opened fire Friday afternoon.
The victims were identified as 21-year-old Justin O’Donnell and 30-year-old Deon Rudd. Two other men were wounded in the attack.

Councilman Brooks was part of the nearly 200 individuals who showed up on Saturday night for a flashlight vigil in memory of the two young black men who lost their lives.  Emotions ran high, but in the end the community seemed resolute.  We are tired of retreating to this senseless violence.  There is a sense that the community wants a NEW Eastside "by any means necessary."

Yesterday, Councilman Brooks met with Terrance Roberts of The Prodigal Son, along with Senator Johnston and 9News to discuss innovative ideas on how we can all work together to guide our young kids in the right direction.  Weekly meetings are going to be held with key participants on how we move forward after yet another horrible tragedy.

Hi Jordan!

Sorry I have been missing but the two surgeries kicked my ass and I doubt I will get to compete in a sprint this year.  But I am still working them and will still wear my Team Tri shorts as I coordinate the swims.

Wondering if you can help to see if anyone in the club is interested...

Metro Brokers Tri, June 1 (Fri night) at Cherry Creek - I need people with boats, jet skis, or kayaks as well as lifeguards.

Denver Triathlon, June 10 (Sunday) at Sloans lake - Need all of the same except jet skis.

The boats and skis are to move lifeguards.

I can get a few bucks for the Denver Tri but Metro is offering food and beer only per Syd Cornell.

Thanks for any help you and the club can give!

Very Best,

Sarge

[CPN] A message from Mayor Michael B. Hancock

Dear Denver Resident -

As Mayor, I'm charged with ensuring the health and safety of our City as a whole, and this week Denver takes another step toward achieving this goal. Working with Denver businesses, neighborhoods and community partners, we have undertaken several methods to inform the public about a new law that goes into effect, which prohibits camping on public and private property without written authorization.

This new ordinance provides the City with additional tools to continue Denver's compassionate work of connecting vulnerable populations with key services while maintaining the integrity of our vibrant City.

In Denver, everyone matters, and my administration is committed to delivering on that promise by making sure public and private spaces remain accessible and livable, and that everyone has access to needed resources to lead sustainable lives.

Our number one priority for applying this new law is to ensure it is implemented in a balanced manner and paired with comprehensive services.  Connecting those in need of services to appropriate service providers will be a major part of this process. That is why we developed the CAM system:

·         Contact – Denver Police Department officers will make contact with those who are camping without authorization.

·         Assess – The outreach workers assess campers and their circumstances.

·         Mobilize – Appropriate service providers, organizations or individuals are contacted to assist.

Through the collaborative work of Human Services, Denver's Road Home and Denver Police Department, the CAM system will help ensure we are connecting people with specific services to address a variety people and groups; like travelers, protesters, women and children, those with mental illnesses and those with drug addictions.

My administration has been hard at work preparing for this new ordinance. The Police Department has developed a training bulletin for officers, we have created a real-time shelter update system, and we have extended contracts and waived provisions to keep shelters open. We also have been working with new and existing service providers to bolster comprehensive services for anyone in need. This includes securing commitments for funding of two additional outreach workers. And we are not done yet.

Denver is a great city because we are compassionate and collaborative. While we are working hard to provide quality services, we cannot do this alone. That is why we are asking the greater community to help by:

·         Distributing the attached flyer to those in need;

·         Emailing this letter to five friends and post it to your Facebook;

·         Donating $5, $10 or $25 to Denver's Road Home; and

·         Attending one of Denver's Road Home annual events.

Now, more than ever, we need the community to come together to support our vibrant city and help us rebuild the lives of those who are most in need. Together, we will deliver a world-class city where everyone matters.

Respectfully,

Michael B. Hancock

Mayor

Sewa Denver Cricket Tournament Spreadsheet updated

Namaste All,

Krishna and I walked through Game Logistics and Sponsorship tabs in the spreadsheet
and cleaned them up. We assigned tasks, updated task status and put notes in Remarks
column. We followed the Rally Task status pattern and here are the statuses.

  1. DEFINED - Tasks is defined but no work started
  2. IN PROGRESS - Work has started but not finished.
  3. COMPLETE - Task is complete.
We also used DEFERRED or NOT REQUIRED in a few places. These are not Rally tasks
but we used them for lack of a better descriptive status. We could use CANCELLED or
CLOSED. Please let us know what you all think.

Please open the shared spreadsheet and see your tasks and also let Krishna or me
know if you have any contacts.

Please let me know if it is possible for us to have a face to face meeting on Monday somewhere
in south. Srikanth ji and I can come together to the meeting. I have a meeting at 2 PM on Monday
so please setup Sewa meeting after 4.30 or 10 in the morning.

Dhanyavaad,
Vidya

[CPN] REMINDER: City Park Playground Survey PLEASE FORWARD

Denver Parks and Recreation to put potential multi-generational
City Park Playground Designs on public display

DENVER, CO – Starting May 16, Denver Parks and Recreation (DPR) is moving on to the next phase of reimagining play at Denver’s historic City Park Playground by putting on display to the public for comment and input the eight different potential designs for a new and innovative playground that will be designed for all generations to use and enjoy. A driving force behind the designs is to create a space that will benefit citizens of all ages and have amenities for kids ages 1 to 101.

Between May 16 and June 7, the eight potential playground designs will be available for public viewing online with a survey at www.Denvergov.org/reimagineplay and also at different public venues, including the Denver Museum of Nature & Science, Denver Zoo, Denver Central Library and Wellington E. Webb Building. The goal is to engage the community in 2012 through a progression that will challenge currently accepted definitions of play and re-think play as a multi-generational, unique, multi-faceted experience in an urban space. (Note: Regular admission fees apply to see the boards inside the Denver Museum of Nature & Science and Denver Zoo.)

To start the Reimagine Play process, DPR kicked off a design competition in March of 2012 that encouraged highly motivated, qualified and experienced design teams to submit their ideas for the future of this space. All of the participating eight design firms have local representation. The submission deadline was May 11 and the next phase will be for DPR to collect public input on the eight designs to present to the Competition Jury. The Competition Jury will then select three finalists from the eight submissions and move forward with public presentations from the three finalists.

Calendar for displays of potential City Park Playground designs (dates subject to change):

§  May 16 – June 7; Online : www.Denvergov.org/reimagineplay (online survey included)

§  May 18 – 19: Denver Museum of Nature & Science (2001 Colorado Blvd., Denver, click here for map)

§  May 20, 12:00 – 3:00 p.m.:.Cake Crumbs (2216 Kearney St. Denver, click here for map); Hosted by City Park Alliance

§  May 21 – 25: Denver Zoo (2300 Steele Street, Denver,  click here for map)

§  May 26, 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.: City Park Dustin Redd playground (1700 N. York St., Denver;  click here for park map); Hosted by City Park Alliance

§  May 29 – June 1: Denver Central Library (10 W. 14th Ave, Denver, CO; click here for map)

§  June 1: 6-9PM County Fair at City Park (City Park Pavilion, 1700 N. York St., click here for park map);  Hosted by City Park Alliance

§  June 4 – 7: Wellington E. Webb Building (201 W. Colfax Ave, Denver, CO; click here for map)

The proposed project area is located in the western part of the park. It is in the general vicinity of the existing Dustin Redd playground; a large, incredibly popular, wooden structure, built in 1996 by community volunteers, that is fast approaching the end of its useful lifespan. The need to remove this beloved but unsustainable structure opens up the opportunity to create a new space and experience well suited to City Park that will surpass the imagination. It is the goal that this new space will be dynamic in design and inviting for park visitors, while encouraging many forms of creative play for all generations.

The overall budget goal for this project is $5 million for design, construction, capital maintenance and programming. While the City and County of Denver will provide some seed money, the majority of the budget will be raised through grants, donations, and other fundraising efforts. The project is anticipated to be built in two phases with a short-term fundraising goal of $3 million for a complete phase 1 construction with additional elements to be added in a future phase.
